Trades in the Workforce introduces students to high-demand skilled trades such as construction management, electrical work, plumbing, and HVAC. In this hands-on course, students explore how buildings are designed, constructed, and maintained while learning practical skills and safety practices used in the trades industry. Students will gain insight into career opportunities that offer strong earning potential and essential roles in the workforce.

Course Description

Trades in the Workforce is designed for 11th and 12th grade students interested in exploring careers in the skilled trades. The course introduces students to the fundamentals of construction management, electrical systems, plumbing, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). Students will learn industry safety practices, basic construction principles, and how different trades work together to complete residential and commercial projects. Through hands-on activities, demonstrations, and project-based learning, students will develop foundational knowledge and practical skills while exploring career pathways, apprenticeships, and training programs available in the trades industry.

    Overview of construction, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC careers, including training programs, apprenticeships, and industry certifications.

  • Construction Fundamentals & Project Management
    Understanding construction processes, reading basic plans, project timelines, and how different trades collaborate on building projects.

  • Construction Safety & OSHA Principles
    Learning workplace safety practices, tool safety, and hazard prevention used in construction and trade environments.

  • Electrical Systems Basics
    Introduction to electrical circuits, wiring components, electrical safety, and how power is distributed in buildings.

  • Plumbing Systems & Water Management
    Exploring water supply systems, drainage systems, pipe materials, and basic plumbing installations.

  • HVAC Systems & Climate Control
    Understanding heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, and how indoor climate and air quality are maintained.
