WBL SEMINAR

Interested in gaining real-world work experience while still in high school? The Work-Based Learning Seminar prepares students for success in workplace settings by teaching the professional skills needed before beginning a Work-Based Learning (WBL) placement. Students will learn expectations for professionalism, communication, and workplace readiness while exploring career goals and preparing for real job experiences. This course is required for any student planning to participate in a WBL placement.

Course Description

The Work-Based Learning Seminar is a prerequisite course for students seeking participation in a Work-Based Learning (WBL) placement. Following iJAG Work-Based Learning guidelines, this course prepares students with the foundational skills necessary to succeed in professional environments. Students will develop workplace readiness skills including communication, teamwork, time management, and professional behavior. The course also focuses on career planning, workplace expectations, and employment preparation. Through hands-on activities, reflection, and skill development, students will build the knowledge and habits needed to successfully transition into a supervised work experience.

  • Workplace Expectations & Professional Behavior
    Understanding employer expectations, reliability, accountability, and workplace etiquette.

  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills
    Developing effective verbal, written, and digital communication in professional settings.

  • Career Exploration & Goal Setting
    Identifying career interests, pathways, and setting short- and long-term career goals.

  • Employment Preparation Skills
    Resume writing, job applications, interviewing skills, and professional networking.

  • Workplace Ethics & Responsibility
    Understanding ethical decision-making, workplace policies, and personal accountability.

  • Financial Literacy & Workplace Success
    Managing earnings, understanding paychecks, and planning for financial responsibility.

  • Workplace Safety & Problem Solving
    Recognizing safe work practices, resolving workplace challenges, and building resilience.
